State unemployment insurance to run out in January

People receiving state funded unemployment benefits can receive up to 26 weeks worth of payments. This is good news if you have been used to having had provided employee benefits in Georgia. With additional payments offered to people in Georgia and the rest of the USA, extended coverage for an additional 14-20 weeks for those people unable to find employment. With approximately 1.3 people who have been out of work for more than a year unemployment insurance would be an essential type of insurance cover to have. But like all insurance, unemployment insurance is something you don't think you will need and don't want to have to pay for. Unfortunately by the time you realise you do need unemployment insurance, you are probably unable to get it.

If the program isn't renewed, after Jan. 1 recipients who have used up their 26 weeks of state benefits won't get any extra coverage. The National Employment Law Project estimated Wednesday that 450,000 people will fall into that category in January.

An additional 600,000 will run out of extended coverage that month, the NELP estimates.

According to reports, about 9 million people are receiving unemployment insurance, 5 million are on the state programs and 4.1 million on the federal extensions - when the state money runs out, 9 million people are going to be without income. Without regular income usually comes a loss of other benefits, or the chance to obtain them. If money is tight, then families and people who have been unable to find work and gain employee insurance benefits, are more likely to cut any excess insurance cover they may have, including health insurance.
