BCBS Health Insurance for People Over Age 65
Obtaining health Insurance for individuals over the age of 65 for major medical insurance in Georgia is not easy. Most people in America are eligible for Medicare when they turn age 65 so most health insurance companies in Georgia do not offer major medical coverage for seniors. However, there are a group of seniors who do not qualify for Medicare, but unable to find health insurance in Georgia and the U.S.
In order to qualify for Medicare in the United States, you must have worked in the country and paid social security taxes for at least 10 years or 40 quarter hours. Many immigrants are surprised by this rule. But if you think about it, it makes sense. Why should people who have never worked in this country have free medical insurance?
With the growing population of parents of immigrants moving into Georgia and United States, many people are finding it difficult to obtain individual health benefits. However, there is one health insurance company in Georgia who will cover individuals over age 65 for traditional major medical cover. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia is the only company I am familiar with that will cover people over age 65 who are not eligible for Medicare. BCBS can provide individuals with health insurance in GA who are in reasonably good health and can pass thru underwriting.
We have had some good luck obtaining quality major medical benefits for people over 65 with Blue Cross in Georgia. However, many of the Blue Cross customer service reps are not aware of these benefits. So if you were to BCBS directly, do not be surprised if they tell you they do not offer traditional major medical plans in Georgia for people over age 65.
When applying for health insurance with BCBS and you are over 65 be aware you might have to submit a medical history with your application. If you do have to submit a medical history with your health insurance application with Blue Cross they might require you visit a U. S. based physician in Georgia for a routine physical prior to application.
