Maternity Leave: Planning health insurance ahead of the big event

If you are employed and your employer offers group health insurance, your pregnancy will (more than likely) be covered by their health insurance policy. Though it is wise to ask in advance to see the policy before hand (if you can).

If you are not employed but want maternity health insurance, it is a very good idea to shop around for the best health insurance policy for your needs.

You need also to be aware of any pre-exisiting medical clauses which may not be covered and also any waiting periods for certain conditions and treatments. Namely you are already pregnant when you start looking at health insurance. The health insurance provider may not cover your pregnancy under their health insurance policy.  As doctors and hospital bills can be expensive, it is a good idea to plan your health insurance needs well before planning the pregnancy. Worrying whether you have adequate insurance coverage during what should be an enjoyable and lifechaning event for you and the family.
